error: hd0,msdos1 cannot get C/H/S values.

I have been struggling with this for quite some time. I have installed two complete version of debian, reformatted, re-partitioned, etc. and read form threads for hours. This first happened when I upgraded to the latest stable release, after which I could not boot the machine. I have a backup of my data, but have never spent this kind of time with a simple "install". Any data or output I will gladly provide to obtain another set of eyes on this issue. Please let me know. Thanks in advance.

Attempt system boot -- get the following:
GRUB Loading.
Welcome to GRUB!

error: hd0,msdos1 cannot get C/H/S values.
Entering rescue mode...
grub rescue

Have tried all bios settings, etc too!

When you reinstalled did you save /home partition, or did you backup to another drive? Where did you install grub?

I backed up the system and then let the install re-partition the disk.

Thanks, EDDY1 -- found my issue. Apparently the batter had died on the motherboard. Lost the pre-sets on the drives. Set them baqck to LBA on the disk drive and we were back on the air.

Thanks for your help!
