Error: Formatting of failed?
 

First off i would like to say that i am a total linux n00b. With that said, this problem will probably be easily answered. I have installed gentoo, red hat 9.0, and debian very recently. I didn't really like any of them except maybe debian a little bit. I just recently go the new Knoppix 3.4 and i absolutely love it. The thing is i want to run it off my hard drive. So I have been trying to follow the instructions give by the knoppiux website/forums. So i press CTRL-ALT F1 and "then type knx-hdinstall" and it says it isn't a bash command. then i found out i could type knx2hd... which ended up taking me to a installer! :) But then when i do the beginner and it formats for me and all, i specify my username and password. blah blah.. then i begin the installation. As soon as the the installing button is pressed i get the error.


Error: Formatting of failed. Some messages from mkfs.ex3: useage mkfs.ex3... the rest of the stuff i just left off... if it will help i can duplicate the message and type the rest of it.

But when i try to partition the drives through the knoppix installer it says my drives are only read only, but when i use cfdisk i can partition with no problems.... what is that?

so no one knows how to fix this. I really want knoppix on my computer for good. I want this to work.... no one can help?!?!?

It's been a while since I tried a hard-drive install of Knoppix, but as I recall, the procedure was to open a terminal and enter "sudo knoppix-installer". This should then bring up the installer menu, and you can choose whether you want a Knoppix or Debian install, set up your partitions and so on from there.

A pretty simple and painless process, as I remember. Anyway, hope this helps.

Yes, it does seem painless, but when I get to the install menu it becomes a pain when it gives me this error message. Something about failing to partition " " <----- an un-named drive. For some reason it doesn't even know what drive it is partitioning. Also it says i have read only access to all my other hard drives including the one that it is trying to partition. I thought this might be a problem so i went into x windows and right clicked all the drives and made them read and executeable. That didn't work. Then I tried actually doing using chmod to a+rwx but that didn't do much either. I still haven't been able to bypass this error.
