Error during updating ubuntu 12.04


'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, E:Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/in.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_precise_multiverse_binary-amd64_Packages, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'

During update ubuntu 12.04.I am getting this error message,
What type of error this is and how to get rid of it....???

If a file could not be parsed or opened, it usually means that file is either missing or corrupted in some way. You might have to reinstall. If this installation was from a disk, you might have to re-download the ISO and burn it again. Or you could first check the md5sum of the downloaded ISO and see if it matches the correct md5sum value for your ISO.
