Error creating te child process for this terminal

when i try to open the terminal window in X , i get this error , all was fine before ,
error:there was an error creating the child process for this terminal
how can resolve this problem, i'm working in the 1st shell now (ALT/Ctrl F1),

I'm using RedHat Entreprise 4,how can i view the logs for system erros ,like in windows , you can view the event viewer ,

the problem i think is with the gnome-terminal
which is gnome terminal 2.7.3
how can i remove the pkg and re-install it.

i've tried deleting the package
rpm -e gnome-terminal
and reinstalling it with a fresh copy from cdrom
rpm -ivh gnome-terminal-2.7.3-1.i386.rpm

i still get the same Error
phew!!!!

When in doubt reboot!!!!!!!
