error compiling gcc4.7.0

usr/lib/gcc-4.7.0/i686-pc-linux-gnu/libgcc:configure:error:cannot compute the suffix of object file:cannot compile.

this error is coming up after i extract the gcc from its tar file and use make command...

till the time my gcc will not get install on the system i will not be able to compile my new kernel...

plz help me to come out of this..
