Error after rebuilding linux kernel

I trying to rebuilding my linux kernel. I am using redhat 9.0 anaconda 2.6.11.
After I finish rebuilding the kernel, I restart the machine and choose the new kernel version. But, I got the following errors:
mounting root filesystem
mount: error 19 mounting ext3
pivotroot= pivot_root (/sysroot, /sysroot/initrd) failed:2
umount /initrd/proc failed:2
freeing unused kernel memory: 196k freed
kernel panic - not syncing: not init found. Try passing init= option to kernel

Thank you.

Does your new kernel require an initrd to load the modules necessary to mount the root partition? Based on your message, it looks like it can't mount the root filesystem, which usually means that you didn't build support for it into the kernel. Also the references to /sysroot and pivot-root suggest an initrd. You should read the mkinitrd man page for info on creating and initrd for the kernel to use during boot. Personally, though, for custom compiles I just build the filesystem stuff directly in so I don't have to worry about it.
