Epson 2450 scanner problem with fc6

When I bring up the Scanner tool ( Xsane) and try to scan it hangs and gives me a message "failed to start scanner Error during device I/O".
sane-find-scanner shows an epson scanner product 0x0112 at libusb:005:004
scanimage -L shows device epson:libusb:005:004 is Epson GT-9700 flat bed scanner. I understand this is the Japanese designation for the 2450.
Xsane shows the scanner as GT-9700:004 after a search of several seconds, but when I hit "scan" it pauses for several seconds and gives the above error message.

I am running a Dell Optiplex GX270 pentium 4 with 1 gig ram and Fedora Core 6.

Does anyone have any experience with this problem or have any ideas how to track it down?
