enough memory?

hi everyone

A Friend of mine has a HPvectra PI processor 2.5gb and 16Mb of Ram. he wants to try linux.

Could it be a problem running XDesktop's with 16MB of Ram memory?
with any of the following distro's?
I have Mandrake 8, Suse 9.0, Debian woody, Slackware 8.1

He was using Windows 98, definitely too slow.
He wants a home computer, with regular aplications such as: Word, Excel, printing, scaning, etc...

Thanks for your help!!!

I haven't tried that :)

But on an old machine with 64MB, X and
fluxbox as the WM OpenOffice, for example,
was no fun ;)

I'd suggest he should get some extra RAM
scnd hand, try to make it at least 64, even
better 128MB ... :)

Cheers,
Tink

I ran FC2 pretty comfortably with 128 megs, so you may have similar results with those distros also. If I had fluxbox when I had 64mb ram, then it may have been more comfortable back then :P

Thank you very much, maybe getting more Ram, would be a good option for him.
because introduce someone to the black screen to use VI, can be a little bizarre.
humm....!!!
