Encrypt a portable hardrive Linux & Win

Hi all,

Just got myself a portable 2.5" external hardrive for work etc and was wondering how I could possibly encrypt it??

I will be using the drive with windows (inc Vista) and Linux so it will have to be compatible.

Any ideas would be great.

Thanks

You can encrypt harddrive from Linux using cryptsetup and luks extension. Google for guides on creating the encrypted partition on your harddrive. Once you have encryption on the drive, you can natively use the drive in Linux and use FreeOTFE (freeotfe.org, i think) to mount drives in windows.

Truecrypt is a good Windows and Linux encyption option.

Drive encryption can be set up during OS install on some distributions, not sure about all of them. Not sure about Windows.

I'm wondering. Could you possibly mean lock access to the drive?

Basically what I am after in a password locked external drive that works with windows and linux.

When I insert the usb it detects the drive and then asks me for the password etc etc.

Must be the same for both OS's!!!!!

As I said before, Truecrypt is what you are looking for. Try www.truecrypt.org
