Empty list of trusted software providers (ubuntu 10.10)
 

Hello everyone. I had some trouble lately that lead me to re-install Ubuntu 10.10. Now I have problems using Update Manager, Ubuntu Software Center, and even apt-get update.

For both Update Manager and the Software Center, everything I try to install gives me this error that the sources are not authenticated. I have a full list of updates that it finds, but it can't install any.

When I run apt-get update, it finds all the updates fine, but gives me a bunch of these errors at the end:
I get the error regardless of what mirror I have selected.

I am able to install through both apt-get install and Synaptic Package Manager. A warning comes up about the not being able to authenticate the software, but both of them can proceed past this, unlike the previously mentioned applications.

So, looking into my settings in the update manager, I see that my list of trusted software providers is completely blank. I imagine this is why nothing is being authenticated. Is there some sort of default list that I can copy? I would prefer to avoid manually installing packages instead of simply updating.

You need to import the Authentication keys. See here for guidance: Importing Authentication Keys. Jump down to the Authentication Tab section.

Thanks for the link, Nexus. I read through it and it makes sense, but I'm still left with the problem of not knowing which Authentication keys to get. From what I've gathered searching around, I should have several keys built in based on the boxes I've check in my software sources window.

^^^ That's a link to a similar display to what I have (I don't have the utilities to easily capture/post/link my screen). It seems that I should have keys automatically to the canonical source if I have that box checked.


Also, I read something about debian-archive-keyring. I tried to install this, but I got an error. Maybe related to this, when I try to shutdown, gnome-keyring-daemon is always 'not-reponding' and I have to force it closed to shutdown. Maybe I don't have any working keyring? (i don't fully understand what that means)

Any ideas about this?

Fixed! I found a solution here:

I never saw any errors with libreadline until I tried a distro upgrade. So I went back and gave that solution a try, and now things to be working. Apt-get update works fine now, and I was able to use Ubuntu Software Center to install again.

I went back and checked my software sources, and three of them had magically appeared after this fix.
