After a quick google search on "emerge block e2fsprogs", I found a couple of resources: http://linux-bsd-sharing.blogspot.co...on-gentoo.html and http://www.odi.ch/weblog/posting.php?posting=524. There were other postings you could check out.

If this is the error you are getting (which it looks like it to me)... What it basically came down to is e2fsprogs incorporates the other two packages now. So, before unmerging them, you need to do an emerge with a --fetchonly on the new stuff (since those other packages are needed for wget and other programs to work right), so you need to have the packages local before removing the things wget needs.

Anyhow, reading those posts should give you a good idea of what to do. One part of the post recommends a --fetchonly on world. That's probably not a bad idea. I remember doing roughly this before on my Gentoo box. You might also want to have a liveCD available just in case.

Do a little research before unmerging anything. Also, you might want to make sure that portage is updated first, since it looks like from some posts that the newest version might be able to solve the problem.

Just from curiosity, which part fixed it? The new portage, or the emerge procedure? I'm curious since the portage thing didn't work for me.

These steps from the first link there fixed it:

1. $ su
2. # eix-sync
3. # emerge --fetchonly e2fsprogs e2fsprogs-libs
4. # emerge --unmerge com_err ss e2fsprogs
5. # emerge --oneshot e2fsprogs
