Email with postfix and blackberry
 

I have a postfix email server and one of my VPs has purchased a Blackberry.I need to know how to set it up so that his company email is forwarded to his Blackberry but still available to him in the office via POP3.

apparently you add ~/.forward text file with the name of the email address you want to forward to and that's it. Don't run a postfix server so this is about as much as I can do.

Blackberry wants to PULL mail from somewhere, unless you have BES - (Blackberry Enterprise Server) and I think BES only want to talk to Exchange. Zimbra can also support Blackberry devices I think...

Since I don't allow external access to my mail server POP3/IMAP here's how we worked around the issue.

Configured a gmail account for the users mail.
Configure postfix to forward a copy of users mail to a gmail account
configure blackberry to pull mail from the gmail account

Yeah I'm sure there are better ways of doing it, but this seemed to work for both the Palm devices as well as the Blackberry devices.

What is the extent of integration/synching between the Blackberry and Gmail and Postfix in your setup? Does your set up do more than just forward mail to the Blackberry? I'm not familiar with the capabilities of Blackberry (outside of an Exchange environment with Blackberry Enterprise Server), but I have a basic Postfix setup at an office and they want to use their Blackberry so bad that they want to know how much it will cost to get Exchange Server! Forgetting their request, how is your setup configured as far as POP3 or IMAP? What happens when they delete on Blackberry, etc.

Our setup just forwards.. there is no further integration..

t's not that they don't want the integration I have offered them other options, they are just too damn cheap to even look at the other options. :)

An alternative to MS Exchange + BES is Zimbra(Standard or Professional)+ BES The Zimbra Option is a lot cheaper than exchange and has a lot of functionality.

Or you can forgo the BES integration and have them access mail using the web browser on their mobile device..

In which case you can use the FREE Open Source Edition of ZCS..
On the up side you can download and install this on a box and have them test it live...

and by too cheap I mean our execs aren't currently willing to pay for a server to install the OSS version of ZCS on... I can hardly wait for February, when the funds start flowing again..

I'm going to give the forwarding a try since it's quick and easy.

I've known about Zimbra but haven't seen it in action. Maybe I'll download to test.

you can start by checking out hte live demo on their site to get a feel for the interface and web client.. very nicely done.

There is a product called ATLAS GMV that allows connection between a BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) and a postfix email server, using IMAP4. You just need to be sure that the IMAP IDLE extension is in place in your server. However, your VP will have to use IMAP instead of POP from now on!

Good to know.. I'll keep that in mind if I ever need to get a BES server, casue I certainly ain't gonna switch to MS Exchange.
