Email basics

There are a lot of resources that talk about sending and receiving email on a Linux system, but nothing that distills it down to its basics (on a conceptual level) on a newbie level. I'm hoping you could provide some guidance.

There seem to be several different email-related programs that I've read about, but I can't tell which are required vs. optional, and complementary vs. mutually exclusive.

Assuming that somebody has no more than a Linux server, an IP address, and a domain name, how might these things be given the ability to send and receive email? (e.g. What types of programs are needed - MTA, MSA, MUA, MDA, etc. - so confusing!)

I look forward to your explanations, thanks.

also try typing in a console "man sendmail", and you should get quite a bit of info from there, a program usually comes with every distro...
