Emacs or vi
although if i am stuck with either of them, i can do the job, but i very frankly am not comfortable with either, though i have used vi a bit. I am confused as to which text editor should i be using from now on, i am leaning more towards emacs, but i wanna know what do u guys say. So much to the famous text editor war.

Depends. VIM is portable because it is very lightweight and used in variety of distributions. Emacs is a heavy weight compared to VIM, but it has a lot of uses and tools to make it very robust for several environments.

with the increasing hardware capabilities, expanding memory everywhere and increased connectivity, i do not see much problem in using emacs. How many of u think one should be equipped to handle both of them well, because either of them does not have an easy learning curve.

oh well,
suppose you crashed your system and boot into rescue mode, you will have only vi with you, atleast in RedHat.

u,re right, and that's why i asked the question, to know what would be better.

Crontab, etc., also use vi syntax

Just learn the basics of both and then stick with the one you like. VI/M and EMACS syntax is seen in a lot of Linux/Unix tools, so I don't think knowing just one of them is an option.
