elvis(vi) in user mode = 'no such session'

Ive been using linux as root for the most of the time ive been using it, but I finally created a user account. The user is in the same group as root. elvis has execute permissions for user, group, and other.

Yet everytime I try to create a new file, edit a file, or just type 'vi', I get "no such session"m and the formatting of my terminal is screwed up. Any help??
Thanks!
