EEE 901 "Goem Error" after ubuntu install?

I have the "linux" version of the eee-901 which means it came with two ssd's a 4Gb and a 16Gb.
I have never run linux on it before as I bought it second hand and immediately installed windows XP on the 4Gb drive and formatted the 16Gb for storage.
Just now, I installed Ubuntu 10.10 netbook remix with a live usb.
I chose to shrink the storage partition on the 16Gb to 10 gig and install Ubuntu on a 6 gig partition at the back of the drive, This is the full extent of the options I chose, apart from "install alongside current OS".

Now, whenever I boot, doesn't matter which drive I choose, I get "Geom Error" and a hang.

Any suggestions, I have searched for this problem but it seems I have got myself in a unique situation.

My drive layout now looks like this (not working):
sda: 4 Gb
sda1: windows xp, 4gb

sdb: 16 Gb
sdb1: storage, 10gb
sdb2: Ubuntu , 6gb

I vaguely remember something about the eee bios breaking the grub procedure but this laptop began life running linux so I don't think that is the problem.

Boot the live usb, open a terminal to get detailed partition info: sudo fdisk -l (lower case Letter L) and post here.
In the terminal type grub to get a grub prompt (grub>) then type: ls -
this should give you drive partition info you can compare to the fdisk output or post here.
What is the order of boot priority of your drives? Where did you install Grub? master boot record of which drive?

Thanks for the help, but you didn't get there in time.
Instead I jumped ship on a dual boot and just installed Ubuntu, and I love it.
I haven't needed windows yet, I can find everything I need with the package manager.
So yeah, it ended well.
