Editing X configuration file

Hello,

I'm pretty new to Linux as well as LQ, this is my first time posting:)

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 and it was running very slow. It would take a long time for the drop down menus to load and even longer to open a folder. I did some browsing and found out I need to install the restricted driver for my video card(Nvidia 6 series). I followed the tutorials on Ubuntu's website. By first deactivating the video driver 10.04 is shipped with and then activating the current Nvidia driver with PPA. Now everything is operating normally, working very fast but the screen resolution in on 800 x 600. I try to change it but I get this message:

"You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server."

But I checked under drivers and Nvidia current is activated(green light).

Also everytime I wake my computer up after it has gone to the screen saver my mouse disappears. It still functions but I cannot see it.

I would be very grateful if someone could help me with these two issues.

Have you tried to run
Code:

sudo nvidia-xconfig
in a terminal? You can find the terminal under Applications->Accessories. After running that command you have to reboot or restart the XServer.
