No worries. I'm guessing that network mangler is active by default in current
centos releases (bad move from my perspective, specially on a server class machine).

I'd try removing the package "network mananger", and then have a look at the
manual creation of the ethcfg-eth0 file again. You weren't off that far, really.

For good measure you may want to take a snapshot of your sysconfig dir before you
have a play ;}.

tar cvzf ~/sysconf.tgz /etc/sysconfig

is it ethcfg-eth0 or ifcfg-eth0? I've seen references to both online. and is /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts the correct directory for either?

Can't really check up on this - don't have RHEL/Centos available atm. Sorry.

OK, so I have my network connection back.

ifconfig eth0 up

route add default gw 192.168.1.1

ping www.google.com

I'm going to switch back to my desktop machine and if I can ssh into the server, we'll call this one closed.
