editing files as user?

I'm trying to edit my /etc/ file I'm logged in as a regular user. I want to be able to edit files by right clicking on them and choosing edit using a text editor. Right now when I right click the file a choose edit it's read only. I know it's because root has ownership but how can I setup Linux so I can edit files other than using a terminal window and using the su comman? Do I have to login in as root and change my user permissions to root? Thanks

Is it KDE/Konqueror you are using?

Try to open the Konqueror in root-mode:

KDE menu -> Run command -> kdesu konqueror

Otherwise you'll need to change permissions (chmod or chown), which is not advisable for system configuration files.

That command will work great. Now that I know the command I went directly to the text editor using the following command:
kdesu emacs
I than selected the file I want to edit. Thanks for getting me pointed in the right direction.
