echo stuff i want to have returns

I have built web pages using php and asp well i know that you can run php scripts in the terminal but what i want to know is this:

echo "blah blah blah <break here> blah blah blah"

when i hit return i don't what all that showing up on one line i want a break where i put the <break> whats the symbol to do that?

in html its <BR> or <P> but what about at the terminal since i'm basically making a script using php to run in the terminal

it just shows <BR> if i put that in there

echo "The total is <BR> $variable3"

when it echo's it's

The total is <BR> blahblah [mrobbins@bluewind mrobbins]$

even my prompt is at the end of the line
