Easy Ubuntu 6.06 (Dapper)Full Backup Solution...
 

Greetings, :-)

I have ubuntu 6.06 (Dapper) set up nicely and I want to backup everything.

I can backup to an external firewire hard drive, linux (root) ext3 (journaled), or a usb flash drive (2gigs).

I would like to use a simple application to accomplish the task, but I can use terminal if need be.

I am a medium level user. :-)

Any input/info is appreciated, :--)

Part of it depends on how you want to backup. Do you want to backup the drive as an image or just the contents of the drive? Do you want to compress the backup?

I am using an iBook G4 ppc with Ubuntu 6.06 (Dapper).

I would like to backup everything and be able to boot the partition with open firmware (option key on boot) if my ubuntu configuration is corrupted.

This is easy to do with the firewire external hd.

If I can make an image as well it would be an added luxury. :--D

That will clone the drive, but I think you'll have trouble booting it unless you can alter the drive numbering in the Bios. It might think the external drive is sda instead of hda (or sdb instead of sda).

If you google around you might find more things. My backup solution is just to tar my /home and /etc directories up once a week and put them on a separate drive.

I use partimage ran from a live cd. Backing up to an external HD (make a mount point for it in /mnt and then mount it via the shell)

I have not used the ppc version, but the x86 version is an excellent tool.
