The version of Austrumi I use now is 3.3.8. I just received a link to download it from whom I'm assuming is the main developer the other day, and put it on a USB stick. I just haven't figured out how to put it on a partition of the hard drive, and have it boot into a GUI like the other OSes there. Also, there's the problem of persistence with Austrumi.
Yes, I realized this was an old thread but encountered it when I was searching for any info on Austrumi.

can I have the link to that one pls???
all the links I am seeing in Google are different vers and scattered to various IP addresses. Now that I am taking a closer look. As well as that link I got was off of DistroWatch's homepage for Austrumi.
off topic just a little, But how do you handle the saveFile and data ie. Downloads movies, source code, etc...
I love FatDog64 (which is a derivative of puppy - 64bit of course ) but to save files and what not the savefile limits one. I ended up using a 32GB Stick and made my saveFile 28GB. so how does one deal with that part of the system having puppy or one of its litter installed direcly on a hard drive pc or laptop?
This doesn't seem to be the case with Tahrpup, either the 32- or the 64-bit versions. All Pups I've ever used until this particular one have that save file limitation you mention. But the first time I did a frugal install of Tahrpup-32 on this Toshiba Satellite I'm using right now, I noticed with the little free space icon on the lower right taskbar that it was showing ALL the free space on the entire partition, totally unlike every other Pup I'd ever used. Then, when available, I put the 64-bit versions on the Toshiba and a Lenovo Thinkpad, with the same resutls. So this save file problem is non-existent with the Tahrpups, at least in all my experience. I've put it on a couple of friends' computers also with the same result. So maybe you should give it a shot and see how it works for you! I love it and its simplicity, ease of use, and that it does everything I want it to do. And it flies on more modern machines.

Sure, no problem. This is from the email Andreys sent: "...the new test version: ftp://austrumi.ru.lv/test/austrumi-3.3.8.iso In it we corrected several errors. --- Andrejs Meinerts

thanks, I'm going to check it out as soon as it finishes downloading and burning to a USB..
I like that you can unplug it after it is set in RAM and it still runs. I got a check that out.
If anyone has any info as to how to install Austrumi to the hard drive, and have it boot into the regular GUI by modifying my existing boot menu (I'm using Puppy's Grub4Dos app which makes it super easy), I would really appreciate it. Also, Andrejs told me that the user name is "root" and password is "austrumi" if this ever comes up. I tried it when all I got was a terminal after booting the installation on the hard drive, and yes, it works.

I have not play with my puppy in like sense I first tried it, then found FatDog64, in it's tool set, it too has Grub4Dos. I have not seen Austrumi yet, as I am currently Downloading it, but, Theoretically could you not install Austrumi onto the Hard Drive then if it is anything like FatDog64 Grub4Dos then just have puppies Grub4Dos search only that HDD with austrumi installed onto it, then have Grub4Dos take over the boot menu?
it you're talking about reg user, not root. then mod it like one has to do with FatDog64? It does not actually give a reg user though, it is root, and when I wanted to download something it sets it as a Reg User giving limited permissions. FD showed a way to mod the desktop file to get it to root permissios. thich is actually the opposite of what I think you are looking for.
But I can roll with using a Root account.
austrumi just got down DL'ing .. about to check it out...
update:
my austrumi I downloaded from here ftp://austrumi.ru.lv/test/austrumi-3.3.8.iso
does not boot after installing it to usb using dd method. I burned it twice to the stick, and tried it each time, no go. Then I went to try and get a version one step back I am now getting
Code:
tftp> connect ftp://austrumi.ru.lv/
Error: Name or service not known
like the sight just disappeared. and yes, even just clicking on the ios link did not work either. so...

Tahrpups 64-bit versions you say huh?
So how would I google that to find it?
Just kidding...
Let me go look into that now, seeings how Austrumi ftp sight just disappeared off the net.

That's exactly what I do. I put Austrumi on a separate partition using the "Install to HDD" tool in Austrumi, then boot into Pup & use Grub4Dos. But then when I boot Austrumi, I get a lot of "Read-only file system" in a terminal, before settling on a usable terminal for root (Austrumi is like Puppy in that regard; if you want regular users, you have to create them as root) but X refuses to start; says X server can't be reached. However Austrumi runs fine from the USB stick (as root, as I just explained.) Plus, I've never had a problem putting it on the USB using Unetbootin that is a tool in antiX, that I also have installed on my hard drive.
I tried Fatdog years ago, but it just never agreed with me or my machines. Tahrpup, for me, is the ultimate Pup! No save file limitation and all my hardware just works. Something strange about all Pups I've ever tried, though, is that when doing a frugal install, I have to shut down & go through all the "First time use" settings and save BS twice before it settles down and behaves normally. I think this is a well-known thing among those in the Puppy community though.
I think someone needs to update there kennel to keep track of all of these puppies running around all over the place. A well kept litter is orginized litter. or is it, A orginized litter is well kept litter? 6 one way, a half a dozzen the other.

They've updated FatDog. What impressed me was what it has inside of it. Tools, that they thought ahead and installed prior to that one needs to take care of business. It makes for a good rescue USB Stick.
They have updated how to get it onto a Stick. One can just use dd to brun it onto a USB Stick. No more having to mount the iso get the files then fiddle with the kernel and config files and such. One line of code off the command line its installed.
Though with it being so small, along with other USB Live Linux I hate putting it on an 16GB. Waste of space.
then the marketers still over charge for a smaller USB Stick, 8GB or 4GB just to have a Rescuse Live Linux on it is all the space one needs.
But when you can buy a 16GB for a lot less then a 8GB or 4GB ( when you can find a 4gb). I usally end up going 16GB and save a few dollars.
SaveFile:
Yeah that is the nature of the beast. Final set up of saveFile so it can save any changes you've made then and in the furture. It's not a 'normal' procedure that people are use to doing when dealing with linux. For sure.
I just wiped a extra HardDrive (280GB) so I think I'll slap it on that and see what I see. Or put in VBox first.
I am looking for a light-weight Linux distro to install on an aging desktop. I have tried Tiny Core 4.0 but failed to install it to an hard drive. And i also failed to install Austrumi 2.4.0 on an hard drive plus i have no idea how to change the keyboard setup from American to UK. For some reason i can't even get Austrumi 2.4.5 to run as a Live CD? Keeps asking for a username and password? Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks
You have seen a lot of suggestions here. I like TinyCore, also puppy and DSL, but for more general work somethign like SPARKY or VSIDO. Alas, those last two are using more resource. Distrowatch and research are your friends here. Since that suggestion has already been made, let us not go into detail again.
Let me ask: in this light weight distro, what exactly are you looking for? What features do you want or need to be happy with your choice?
Without very targeted information on what you need, we cannot give very targeted recommendations.
Another distribution worth trying may be Salix (https://www.salixos.org/download.html) which is based on Slackware. I tried the Mate-desktop version with only 'Basic install' and then added whatever further software I needed. It works well. They also have Fluxbox version.
