E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run

Hi guys! I manually ran sudo dpkg --configure -a in the terminal and it came back with

dpkg: parse error, in file '/var/lib/dpkg/updates/0000' near line 0:
field name `' must be followed by a colon

any help?
i am live booting from ubuntu netbook remix 9.10

Okay so I googled around some more and got past that but I'm still receiving an error when I try to update.

dpkg: failed to open info file 'var/lib/dpkg/available' for reading: Input/Output error
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2)
A package failed to install. Trying to recover:
dpkg: failed to open info file 'var/lib/dpkg/available' for reading: Input/Output error
