DVDs on fedora
 

ok, a couple things, first simply enough, how do I play encrypted dvds on linux? (basically need help installing libdvdcss) this is where my second problem occurs, compiling tar.gz, I've tried doing this before and failed, so some easy instructions for both issues would be helpful, thanks

I have totem and Mplayer installed, neither work

If you add the Livna repository you can add libdvdcss, along with many other non-free packages with yum.

i am using Atrpms, i a, using fedora 9, currently sustaining an unstable livna repistory

Why were you unable to compile libdvdcss from source? Was there an error?

If you are just starting to run linux (from your skill level), it is a really bad idea to be using a beta (F9).

its the preview version, also im upgrading it may 13 when the final release comes out, and the deal with compiling is, well i dont know how to compile it,

If you don't have a repository that provides it, yum isn't going to help you.

To compile it from source is relatively simple, download it, extract it, then in the main directory of the source run './configure', then run 'make', then 'make install'.

The preview is still a beta. A lot of the repos will not be available until after the beta period is over (so they do not have to reinvent the wheel). The release date has already been pushed back two weeks (was supposed to be April 29 (?)) and it would not be the first time the final release was pushed back more than once. Learn to walk before you try to run.

As you see, this is for Fedora *8*. Fedora 9 in pre-release form is more for tinkering than for using!

so i should expect things to be working when the final release comes out may 13?

Encrypted DVD's will not be working, because libdvdcss goes against Fedora's policies, so it won't be installed by default.

Though when Fedora 9 is finally released, the Livna repository will be available for it and will have libdvdcss.
