DVD writing

I'm not new to Linux, but I confess to being very green when it comes to writing DVDs. I have a CD/DVD reader, but I have no idea whether or not it will write DVDs. Is there any way to tell?

The following is what I get when I do a "dmesg":

Code:

root@brixton=> dmesg | grep -i dvd
hdc: HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4481B, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
hdc: ATAPI 48X DVD-ROM CD-R/RW drive, 2048kB Cache, UDMA(33)

any pointers would be appreciated.

You can't write on DVD ROMs using a DVD ROM drive. You have got a [DVD ROM]/[CD-R/RW] drive. You'll need a DVD R/RW drive if you want to write on DVD disks.
