DVD?....urm...how

hey!

i thought i would try a post here... ....any way

i still can't get dvd playback i have installed the NVIDIA drivers and they are fine every thing works except DVD's.

xine error = computer too slow and it says i should try and tweek it but i have tried all the options the program has (SLOW MY A$$!! im running a p4 2.4ghz MACHINE with 512 Mb ram and a Gforce 4 mx440 video card with 128mb ram)

mplayer error = program closes (all by it's magical self) and there are no errors printed on the screen it just closes.

my dvd player's "label" (i guess) is cdrom0 (MCC) and cdrom1 (on the desktop) there is no device dvd in dev/dvd
thanx in advance!

How are you trying to play using mplayer? From a command? If your trying to use the gui for it, you have to use gmplayer instead of just mplayer. If your using the command and mplayer, how are you attempting to play the dvd's, etc?

I've used xine a couple of times, its crap and I would just attempt to get mplayer working at this point. And ignore the error about being too slow, mplayer does that to and mine play just fine.

make a link to your dvd device.
if it is hdc
ln -s /dev/hdc /dev/dvd

mplayer -dvd 0
or 1

mplayer -vo help
mplayer -ao help

yeh but the thing is mplayer just closes and nothing happens. i do not use the command line yet (i have to get more used to it). am i supposed to use the path /dev/dvd if so there is no /dev/dvd i have to switch it to mnt/cdrom1 or dev/cdrom1 i have tried both but still nothing happens.

thanx

oh yer in mandrake control centre it says it is a dvd but it does not call it a dvd why?

whansard 09-12-2003 07:23 PM

when mplayer gets done doing what you tell it, it exits.
so if you tell it to play a dvd, and there is no dvd, it just
exits. if you type something wrong, it just exits with an
error message.

have you tried the /dev/dvd symlink suggestion earlier in this thread?? i had a similar problem with gmplayer not playing dvds and the problem was that it is set up to look in the default place /dev/dvd. if this place does not exist, it closes...no work to be done, because it sees no device, therefore no disk to play. fixed my problem anyway....

specialK 09-13-2003 12:12 AM

yep tried it.

still not working. it's weird mandrake uses my dvd player as it's default when ever it asks for me to put a cd in (when im installing apps) it opens the dvd tray and my burner gets left alone (thought it might help). oh yer regarding errors i no longer get them nothing happens the dvd reads and then mplayer freezes and thats it nothingness.
