dvd playing
hi!
I have ogle install in my laptop, so I think when I insert a dvd movie, the computer suppose to auto play it. that was not the case; and when I type /dev/dvd in the terminal, it says permision is denied. please tell me what should I do to make the dvd-drive to autoplay dvd movie. by the way, my computer is a toshiba 3005-S304 laptop that I use mandrake 8.1 as the operating system |
from what i have heard, dvd's are copyprotected, and you need licensed software to decode them. and seeing how linux is open source...get my drift?
|
mmm... don't think that the css is the problem. that's already been cracked. it's probably a problem with the automounting of the dvd drive. i don't use ogle, so i can't really test out any of my advice here :)... but you might need to mount the dvd drive before you can use it. check the ogle page
http://www.dtek.chalmers.se/groups/dvd/ for the FAQ and manual. check on freshmeat.net for any dependencies that you might need to add. |
for ogle you need to click on File and Open Disc if you have the gui installed

Hi !!!
I would recomend you to use xine version 0.9.7 instead of ogle. You can install some plugins to use the navigation menu. If you want to play encrypted dvds then you must install another plugin that will play them (but I think that will be illegal). Xine is a good dvd player and supports a lot of formats (including DivX), thats the player I use to play dvds, give it a try. Azael |
As far as being legal...
You mean if I rent a movie and watch it with windows it is legal, but if I use linux it is illegal. I don't know if it's right or not but I say it's B.S. I think xine works better too. Ogle is good for having the menu and other stuff, but xine works great. Where is the plugin for menus in xine? If I try to open a dvd in xine with the DVD button it says something about an illegal encryption code or some hogwash. So I click on D4D and I guess that makes it legal because it works. |
technically, any open source dvd player, xine or ogle, or anything else, is illegal, if it can use the dvd-css decryption. whether or not you happen to agree with that isn't really relevant, it's still illegal... but, then again, chaining a giraffe to a lamppost is specifically forbidden in Saginaw.
since the css was cracked, there's really no way to stop people from using it. |
cool
so if it works we might as well use it I always look around for cops before I start playing movies, just in case. |
oh god... david... you passed me up on the posts list... you asshole :)... i didn't even notice you were that close. ah well... at least i saw kewpie coming when he bumped me down to #5...
speaking of which, kewpie hasn't posted in a while. wonder where that boy went... |
he's way out of reach.
Guess I will never catch him. Last time I looked you were ahead of me by 50. Guess I stayed up too late the last few nights. LOL :Pengy: |
Xine
Hey guys,
Since y'all (yes I'm in the "south") seem like Xine pros, can you help me on installing it on my machine? I am running Mandrake 8.0 and I tried the RedHat RPM's and did the fix I found on it, but it didn't work - I tried compiling the source, but when I ran "./configure" it gave me errors towards the end of it and Make gave me errors as well. Any suggestions how I can install a DVD player on my Linux so's I can meet y'all in prison? <grin> |
what errors?
there may be some library files that need to be installed. maybe in /usr/local/lib I'm not sure, but try it again and see. if it's library files you can create links to them in your library path or add the new path to /etc/ld.so.conf and run ldconfig you will really need to give more info on the problem. |
Xine
I would also recommend Xine, i'm using it on my Suse box and am happy with the performance.
Ogre is good but Xine is a full player supporting multiple formats. Hpe this helps, Cheers, :) |

all this time and he's STILL #2.... gah come on david.. whup his ass.... if you won't i guess I'LL have to... and while on this thread: USE MPLAYER, IT'S NICER THAN XINE and OGLE (not Ogre ;)) |
Well it looks like that may not happen. They shut my crew down, so no more dsl. I took down both of my Linux routers.
looks like motels for a while. No more sitting around the boat all day browsing the internet. Oh well, maybe I will be somewhere that has pretty good phone connections. |
