DVD Playback in Ubuntu 8.10
I am 4 weeks old in Ubuntu and the only thing I can't seem to figure out is original DVD playback. I've tried multiple players, added libdvdcss, medibuntu and still no luck. I've read a lot (restricted formats and others) and I've tried everything I've found. Since I'm still new to Linux I don't fully understand how things are structured and 20 years of DOS/Windows makes it harder to think in Linux.
I have a LG DVD drive which I believe is compatible with Ubuntu. I'm stumped since everything else has been surprisingly simple and straightforward. What I'd like to do is play my DVDs in VLC as I like that player the best. The backup copies of the kids' movies play no problem. Thanks in advance for any help. Here is the error I get in VLC. Similar ones come up in Mplayer and Totem. Playback failure: DVDRead could not open the disk "/dev/scd0". Your input can't be opened: VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvdsimple:///dev/scd0'. Check the log for details. Here are the specs on my drive while I have an original DVD in the drive *-cdrom:0 description: DVD-RAM writer product: DVD-RAM GSA-H22N vendor: HL-DT-ST physical id: 1 bus info: scsi@1:0.0.0 logical name: /dev/cdrom logical name: /dev/cdrw logical name: /dev/dvd logical name: /dev/dvd2 logical name: /dev/dvdrw logical name: /dev/scd0 logical name: /dev/sr0 version: 1.02 serial: [HL-DT-STDVD-RAM GSA-H22N1.0207/01/31 capabilities: removable audio cd-r cd-rw dvd dvd-r dvd-ram configuration: ansiversion=5 status=nodisc |
Under Administration--> Software Sources, make sure you have the first 4 options selected, then from the commandline do:
Code:
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras Quote:
If you don't understand the logfile post its contents to this thread. |
I will try what you suggested then check the log file and see what it says. I didn't know where to find it. I'll keep you posted.

Can't find the .vlc folder. home/user/ has everything but .vlc. Could it be somewhere else?
