DVD Playback in SuSE 10.0
 

Ok, I'm completely lost and confused after reading numerous posts and websites. I am running SuSE 10.0 and am trying to get DVD playback. I currently have Kaffeine, Totem and Xine installed. All three of these apps give me an error message saying that for one reason or another (i.e. patent reasons, missing plugin, etc) they cannot play DVDs. The only eror message that seems to make sense is the xine error which says that is is missing a "MRL" plugin. After checking the websites for al three websites, I cannot figure out how to get DVD playback. Any help?:scratch:

You probably need libdvdread and libdvdcss2. I'm not sure where you can find them these days.

ok, found and downloaded both files (libdvdread and libdvdcss2(thank god for google (or is google god?:) ))) and extracted\installed them, but.........no change.

I went back and reloaded the libdvdcss files and I can now get most DVDs to playback, but only in xine. Totem and Kaffeine still will not play any DVDs.

When trying to open in Kaffeine, I get the following message, "This version of Xine (used by Kaffeine) has only a reduced set of supported codecs. It is not able to play DVDs. Read http://support.novell.com/cgi-bin/se.../xine_dvd.html for further details." Of course the link goes nowhere (I'm beginning to really detest the "official" SuSE support). The version Kaffeine I have, I think, is 0.7.1.

When trying to open in Totem, I get this message, "There were no decoders found to handle the stream, you might need to install the corresponding plugins". I thought adding the libdvdread and libdvdcss were supposed to fix that.

The DVDs which will not playback in xine give this message, "The source seems encrypted, and can't be read. Your DVD is probably crypted. According to your country laws, you can or can't install/use libdvdcss to be able to read this disc, which you bought. (Media stream scrambled/encrypted)". Again, I have libdvdcss installed (version 1.2.8), so what's going on?

I really don't mind using xine for DVD playback, but I am curious as to why Totem and Kaffeine will not work and xine will. Also, why will some DVDs playback in xine and not others even though I supposedly have the correct libs installed?

Are you trying to play a Region 1 disc? I have never had any issues. HAve you tried a Different CD.

The way libdvdcss works is the following: on every DVD there is a code that the player needs to decode the data. Libdvdcss finds that and decodes the data. Because of that, some discs don't work, although I have never run into that issue.

Yes, all the DVDs, both the ones that will play and the ones that won't, are region 1 discs. The region code is actually something that I had never heard of before this past weekend, so I went and checked.

Another thing that I have checked is that the current plugins were installed. When going to Totem's webpage, I follow the link (to freshrpms.net) for the gstreamer codecs (gstreamer08-plugins-extra) and all versions available for install are version 0.8.8-3. Doing a quick check via YAST, I have installed version of 0.8.11-3. I have a question about the packages list at freshrpms though. They do not list a section for the SuSE distro, but I had been led to believe tat the Fedora versions would work with SuSE.

1) Will the Fedora packages work with SuSE?
2) The Fedora package page lists a bunch of other packages besides the gstreamer08-plugins-extra package, i.e. gstreamer08-plugins-extra-video, gstreamer08-plugins-extra-dvd and gstreamer08-plugins-extra-audio. Are all of these contained within the gstreamer08-plugins-extra package or do they need to be loaded seperately?
3) Does anyone know where to get a SuSE specific update to the gstreamer packages. I'm still not positive that is my issues since I have 0.8.11 installed and all I can find are 0.8.8 packages.

Some fedora packages will with with suse, but you're better off installing from source (or making your own package)
