DVD burner issue, will read cd's but not dvd's
Hi running Debian testing my burner is a liteon dvd-rw. I am having trouble getting it to mount any dvd movies or data discs but will read cds just fine. The cds auto mount so I assume /etc/fstab is set properly.
When I try to mount dvd's manually in the cli I get "no medium found" or no file type specified, tried with udf and iso9660. I have installed the libdvdcss2, libdvdnav4 and lildvdread3 but I might be missing something here. I have 2 optical drivers on the secondary controller both set to cable select, primary is my cd-rw and the second is the dvd-rw. The burner should be working fine cause it worked in my wifes xp and it has worked in slackware for a short time and ubuntu. Can anybody help me figure this out? Thanks |
Don't dismiss the hardware too quickly. I've got a DVD drive that only reads DVDs and won't do a thing with CDs. Took me ages to work that out for some reason.

Unplug the cd drive and try again. There are some chipsets that do not get along well with cable select.
|
Well ive tried unplugging it and I actually had a round cable on there and switched to a flat one, that doesn't help.
Ive been searching this on google and think I will try switching it to master/slave or even updating the firmware to see if that works. |
Unplug the cd drive, leave it unplugged, and then check the DVD drive.

It's the same drive isn't it?

Oh - I didn't read that far

Yea they are 2 seperate drives I unplugged the cdrw and tried just using the one(dvd burner) giving me problems and still no go, I can here the drive trying to read then it just quits and doesnt load.

If you can I would pull it again and try it in another machine. SOME of those drives have separate lasers for the DVD and CD. The DVD one COULD be cooked. I have fought to many things that I assumed were a Linux problem that turned out to be a hardware problem. In one instance I was having trouble burning DVDs reliably, it turned out to be a bad stick of memory(took me over two months to track out).

Solved the problem it must have been getting dirty for awhile, when I moved it to my wifes XP it done the same thing.
Since its past the warrenty period I took a chance taking it apart to clean the laser, so cleaned it and put it back in, magically its working again. |
