If you are waiting for the terminal to echo back "********" or something like that while typing your password you will be waiting for a long time. Just type in the password and then hit enter. Mine does the same thing and when I hit enter it still works. If that's not your problem then I ask if you have numbers in your password. If so, is your numlock on? Also passwords are case sensitive. You could also have a stuck key on the keyboard. You could try using the enter key on the 10-key pad instead of the one on the QWERTY keyboard. Sorry I'm just trying to through out my thoughts here in hopes that one of them will help you.

What he said; Unix/Linux does not do the MS thing of ***** etc. It reads what you type, but does not 'respond' until you hit <return> key.
