Dual Screen Issue - Working but not 100% correct

Hi,

Just installed openSuSe 10.2, everything seems fine apart from my dual screen setup.

When I log in as root, I changed the /etc/X11/xorg.conf to this:

The "ServerLayout" at the bottom is the most important bit. Also I have removed a lot of text from it as there is no need to display it.

Code:
Section "Screen"
  DefaultDepth 24
  SubSection "Display"
    Depth 16
    Modes "1440x900" "1366x768" "1280x800" "1152x864" "1280x768" "1024x768" "1280x600" "1024x600" "800x600" "768x576" "640x480"
  EndSubSection
  SubSection "Display"
    Depth 24
    Modes "1440x900" "1366x768" "1280x800" "1152x864" "1280x768" "1024x768" "1280x600" "1024x600" "800x600" "768x576" "640x480"
  EndSubSection
  Device "Device[0]"
  Identifier "Screen[0]"
  Monitor "Monitor[0]"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
  DefaultDepth 24
  SubSection "Display"
    Depth 16
    Modes "1440x900" "1366x768" "1280x800" "1152x864" "1280x768" "1024x768" "1280x600" "1024x600" "800x600" "768x576" "640x480"
  EndSubSection
  SubSection "Display"
    Depth 24
    Modes "1440x900" "1366x768" "1280x800" "1152x864" "1280x768" "1024x768" "1280x600" "1024x600" "800x600" "768x576" "640x480"
  EndSubSection
  Device "Device[1]"
  Identifier "Screen[1]"
  Monitor "Monitor[1]"
EndSection

Section "Device"
  BoardName "GeForce FX 5200 (0x0322)"
  BusID "1:0:0"
  Driver "nv"
  Identifier "Device[0]"
  Option "usevnc" "no"
  Screen 0
  VendorName "NVidia"
EndSection

Section "Device"
  BoardName "RIVA TNT2 Model 64/Model 64 Pro"
  BusID "0:10:0"
  Driver "nv"
  Identifier "Device[1]"
  Screen 0
  VendorName "NVidia"
EndSection

Section "ServerLayout"
  Identifier "Layout[all]"
  InputDevice "Keyboard[0]" "CoreKeyboard"
  InputDevice "Mouse[1]" "CorePointer"
  Option "Clone" "off"
  Option "Xinerama" "on"
  Screen "Screen[1]" RightOf "Screen[0]"
  Screen "Screen[0]"
EndSection

Section "DRI"
    Group "video"
    Mode 0660
EndSection

Section "Extensions"
EndSection
Now, when I log in as "root" everything is fine, I made a few changes and now the screens are the correct way around, the resolution is correct, everything is great !!

However if I login is as my normal user (the account I will be using day to day) the screens switches back around to the original configuration, when first installed...? Am I missing something..?

Thanks in advanced

If it works for root, but not a normal user, then it's probably a permissions issue.
Are you a member of the group video ?
groups in a terminal will tell you.

Hi Stuart.

Couldn't trouble you to explain how by any chance could I mate? Or what caused it?

I'm buying a new computer in the next couple of weeks with dual 22" BeNQ monitors so I think your experiences may come in handy.

Anything you can add would be brilliant as I'm sure it's not the last time the problem will arise.

Thanks and all the best my friend,

Tim.

Hi Tim,

This is my working xorg.conf, I have removed the stuff like keyboard and mice things.... The below is the important stuff!

If you are building a new machine and your graphics card has dual output, I reckon you will be fine, the problem I had was, I am using an old AGP card with an older PCI (Not PCI-E) card, so you have to fool X a bit. The most important SECTION below is "Server Layout"....

Code:
Section "Monitor"
  Option "CalcAlgorithm" "XServerPool"
  DisplaySize 408 255
  HorizSync 30-82
  Identifier "Monitor[0]"
  ModelName "ACER AL1916W"
  Option "DPMS"
  VendorName "ACR"
  VertRefresh 43-76
  UseModes "Modes[0]"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
  Option "CalcAlgorithm" "XServerPool"
  DisplaySize 408 255
  HorizSync 30-82
  Identifier "Monitor[1]"
  ModelName "ACER AL1916W"
  Option "DPMS"
  VendorName "ACR"
  VertRefresh 43-76
  UseModes "Modes[0]"
EndSection

Section "Modes"

Ok, that makes sense then.

Were you using DVI or is that a little before the cards time?

I'll be having a lash at an 8800GTS on mine so I hope it all goes well, otherwise it will be a rather expensive experiment (moreover, I may have to install the copy of Vista I have after all -shudder).
