As root go down to runlevel 3 (no grafic mode) with "init 3" (WARN: all windows will be closed!)
and try "sax2" or "xf86cfg".

What kind of graphics card do you have? I had to compile the drivers for my Nvidia card and then manually tweak my /etc/X11/xf86config to get mine to work.
