Dual monitor working... kind of

I have just installed my first ever version of Linux(ubuntu). I was able to go under system --> Preferences --> Display I have two 19" monitors with a recommended 1440 x 900 resolution. I have my resolution set to 1440 x 990 resolution. Here is the problem. The monitors work together as if they are one monitor but I can not reach all the way to the right side of my right monitor. My mouse can go all of the way over but my windows can not. Such as this mozilla firefox window. There is no set line that it can not cross on the right monitor. The problem is that it can not pass a certain line on the left monitor. About 1" of the window remains on the left monitor no matter what. If I try to shrink the window off of the left monitor, the window spazzes out and reappears on the left monitor. Is there anyone who can offer some help?

edit* I have found that if I change the configuration (to anything else) and then change it back, I can fully use both monitors. I still have the problem that unless I do that, the monitors are limited(the right monitor is).

Is there anyone who might have an idea? I have been trying google searches to no avail.

Silly question, but have you installed/updated your video card's drivers?

SteveThePirate 08-10-2009 12:46 AM

I actually just asked that in another thread. No I did not and it is silly of me to not think of that. For some reason I was thinking that perhaps linux was just that good. I have the drivers here with me, but when everything worked after install, I was befuddled. Windows is not that nice. You install windows and then nothing works well.

Yeah, and Ubuntu has a TONNN of drivers preinstalled and ready to go, but it might be a recent driver change that could have done that. And yeah, on Windows, without my drivers installed, the best resolution I get is 480 lol! I did notice that when I switched as well, that the basic video drivers are much better; however, mine still needed to be updated in order to work perfectly also :) I really hope that all solves your issue!!

Ya, that really helped a lot, and it answered the question to my other thread. I was surprised that my dual monitors even worked with the generic drivers. Thanks a lot.
