Dual Monitor Issues

I am trying to connect my Panasonic TV to my laptop, which is running LM 17.3. I connect via an HDMI cable. The issues:

1. LM recognises the TV and brings up the Display window. I can't select the option to 'Mirror Displays'

2. If I select my laptop as the primary, Icant bring up windows from the taskbar.

3. If I select the TV as the primary, then the laptop display disapears.

4. The sound does not work on the TV. Only the laptop.

We are going to need a bit more information first.

Which Desktop Environment?
i.e. Gnome, Cinnamon, XFCE, KDE, etc.

What video card is in the laptop?

Thanks for the reply. Problem solved. Linux Mint was not recognising my Nvidia card. I booted up Windows which was. Shutdown and rebooted LM17.3 and it all works fine now. Desktop was Gnome.
