Dual head display, can I move window from one screen to another?
 
I am running KDE on Kubuntu 5.04.

I had finally be able to enable my dual head display in big desktop mode after tinkering with /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Thanks to what you guys have contributed to forum like this.

However, when I move window on my left screen towards the right, instead of the window vanishing from the right edge of left screen and appearing from the left edge of the right screen, the window vanish from the right edge of left screen and appearing from the left edge of the SAME screen (left screen). While I can see my mouse cursor move to the other screen, the window just move but stayed at one screen.

Is it possilbe for the windows to be dragged to the other screen in KDE just like what windoze does?

Hmmm... I know window dragging between screens is supposed to work. I have my fluxbox setup working correctly that way. I've done what you want with KDE before too. Perhaps KDE has xinerama disabled, or KDE is compiled without xinerama support? Google around for xinerama and see what you come up with. I think your problem is related.

I have heard that it would have issue with ATI's fglrx driver so I intentionally excluded that. But thanks, I will into that. :)

Something interesting has happened. :) I have enabled xinerama. And my displays are in somewhere between the "clone mode" and the "big desktop mode".

Both display now displays the same stuffs which resembles the "clone mode", except that my mouse cursor can move to the other screen like what you get in the "big dektop" mode. On the primary screen everything works normally, but on the secondary screen the mouse click is not registered, although the mouse can move on it.

When working with a single card, I couldn't ever get Xinerama figured out. What I did do was run the fglrxconfig program and choose the "Big Desktop" option.
I believe the following line is what actually sets the ATI version of xinerama ...

What it looks like to me is that originally you had selected "dual head" from the menu in the fglrxconfig program. What this does is sets up two different x servers, window managers, etc and everything is kept separate except for the fact that you mouse can cross between the two screens.

This is different from the "big desktop" option b/c it sets up one big screen which spans accross two physical screens.

So when you attempt to move a window to the next screen the ati driver deals with it somehow and it stays on the screen. So to fix the problem your having you should just need to run the fglrxconfig program again and select big desktop from the firegl screen layout section.

The reason why in the xorg.conf file there is only one screen section is because the ati drivers take care of all the dual screen business and as far as the rest of the os is concerned there is only one screen. And as far as I know (after dealing with this stuff the last couple of years) xinerama isn't supported. So prepare for lots of windows to appear over the join in the screen :)

However, the way I overcame this is by changing my window manager a little bit so that when a window wants to appear over the join, it pushes it onto the next window. It's a bit dirty and only works for the one window manager, but it works for me. I've hacked it for metacity if anyone's interested.

Or if anyone has any better suggestions, be my guest.

Hi,

Thanks for your input. I have tried what you guys said and I managed to do it.

However, don't think it suits my need better than my current 2 desktop setting.

Many softwares still does not support this feature and have things appearing between two screens. While it is not a big problem for most application (other than simply annoying), it is a serious problem for fullscreen presentation softwares.

hi!

ich have nearly the same problem like navyblue, but with an exception.
i have two diffrent screen resolutions. on the left side i have my laptop with an 16:10 display and a resolution of 1280x800. on the right side i have an lcd monitor (Hyundai L90D+) with an resolution of 1280x1024.

so when i define in xorg.conf 2 screens, 2 monitors and 2 devices i have the same problem of the first post, but at least, both screens run the correct resolution.

when i run fglrxconfig and choose "big desktop" i have a big desktop indeed and i can switch windows from the right to the left, and from the left to the right, but i can run only von y resolution (800 or 1024).

so what can i do?

i have a "dell inspiron 8600c laptop" with an "ati mobility radeon9600 pro".
my linux is gentoo with the kernel 2.6.12-gentoo-r10.
my ati driver version is 8.16.20 and the xorg version is 6.8.2-r2.

i hope, somebody can help me!

Well, when I look at my xorg.conf file, I only have 1 screen section, but you have two, so I assume you have added it to try and fix your problem. However, I don't think that will work if you still want to use the fglrx drivers. Since all the display stuff is done internally, I think it will get ignored.

I'm not really sure if there is a good solution to your problem, maybe you could try to use a virtual desktop so that the screen that is 1280x800 can at least scroll to all parts of the desktop without distorting the other one.

well... Hmmmm I think I am using that driver here to do just as you describe! Also I have no issues with developers support in my implementation of "big desktop" so not sure how that is to be taken.
