Dual display problems with Linux 10.0 and Nvidia GeForce 6800
Hi folks,
i'm a semi-newbie here on the forum, and i've just succesfully installed Suse 10.0 on my Dell Dimension alongside Windows XP Professional with a Nvidia GeForce 6800 graphic card with dual display capabilities (one digital, the other analog). I had tried this with an earlier version (i believe it was 9.2), but no dice- it didn't come to grips with the SATA hard drive and didn't even recognize it.
anyway, my problem is trying to get the twinview functionality to work properly, but it doesn't seem to work. i found some other postings related to this subject for similar graphic cards and edited the XF86.conf file accordingly, but alas- no luck. however, before i changed the file to include a second monitor, only a single monitor was showing up in Yast- however after i had changed the XF86.conf file, it did acknowledge that a second monitor was available, but when i tried to change the settings in Yast and test them (i.e. twinview, xinerama on, e.t.c.) it gave me an error message and instructed me to look at the file /var/log/Xorg.99.log. also, while i can see something on the secong monitor and can tell that it is obviously in the clone mode, it is a horrible resolution, the colors are all mixed up, and it's just completely distorted. the display on the first monitor is fine. i KNOW that it is very close to working, because when i boot Linux there is a perfect symmetrical display on both of the monitors in the clone mode- but as soon as the desktop appears, the second monitor goes blurry and takes on that bad resolution.
nevertheless, i'm having lots of fun tinkering around with the system, and would appreciate any tips you guys could give me on getting my dual head display to function in Linux as well as it does in Windows XP!

both of the monitors are analog 19" Dell CRT's- one of them is an M990, and the other one is an M991. I am using an analog adapter on one of the video ports on the graphic card. There is now also the following error message when i boot up linux:
The application "resapplet" has quit unexpectedly.
here is my config file, and after it is the Xorg.0.log file. does anything look suspicious?

I think the resapplet is most likely something to with resolution changes not positive though I never have heard of it till now. Try the edited file above it should do the xinerama at 1280x1024 and you may want to remove some of the others you have listed in both lines I doubt you are ever going to switching to using them.
thanx again for your help- but i couldn't get it to function properly. i'm baffled as to why, during the boot, the second monitor is perfectly clear and shows a beautiful picture- but when the desktop is finally loaded, it gets all distorted and i can recognize nothing on it. hmmmm....
Got a camera you can use to take a picture so you can post it somewhere we can see it also not that it should make a difference but you should be using 30-96 instead of the 28-96 you have been. Can you post the entire /var/log/Xorg.0.log so we can have a look at it? You may have to break it up into two posts as it is pretty big.

This is super simple but have you tried using the newest nVidia software off nvidia.com? The install went real nice for me both times I used it and ti cleared up both my screens. 6800GT card. Both were digital but I doubt that's the issue.
man, i don't think i've ever had so much fun being up until 4 and 5 in the morning in my entire life- this linux stuff is quite addictive!
I actually found a sample configuration file on the internet (xorg.conf) last night for a GeForce 6600 GT card, and this has ALMOST worked- at least the "resapplet" error doesn't occur anymore when i test the settings. it has obviously recognized two monitors when i go into Yast, but i can do whatever i want, change whatever setting i want- the right monitor is still "disfigured", and the left one just shows weird colors under the test setting.
I'm going to try your suggestions and get back to you with the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file if it doesn't work. Also (i don't know if i can post this here, but i'll try), i'm having some problems gaining complete, unrestricted access to the internet. i've noticed that i can only access the internet sites under linux that i have recently been to under Windows- if i try any other sites that i haven't been to in Windows, it always says "connecting to....", and after about 10 minutes the message appears that the browser timed out and couldn't reach the site. is this phenomena familiar to anyone?
thanx so much- downloading the latest driver from nvidia and installing it did the trick- fantastic display now! the only thing i had to edit in the xconfig file was the twinview orientation of the monitors, and i changed it from
"TwinViewOrientation" "Leftof" to
"TwinViewOrientation" "Rightof"
i'll post the file in a sec. that enabled my graphic card.
again, vielen Dank for your help and tips!
