Exclamation dual boot xp redhat8 ... problem

I installed XP (first) and RedHat8 and my comp boots right into XP without showing any recognition of Linux. My previous post didn't help me (it was called "Dual Boot XP and RedHat8" or something). Here's some more detail:

I dont think I'm supposed to install LILO in the MBR, and I dont think it is. I believe LILO is installed on a Linux partition, but the MBR starts Windows (as yngwin) suggested. Oh, btw, what is a swap partition ('cause I have one of those to along with a ext3 partition)? Here is my boot.ini file from Windows:

[boot loader]
timeout=0
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

I tried adding a "bootsect.lnx" file to my C:\ with the following lines:

dd if=/dev/hdx of=/bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1

I got it off some forum or website (I think it was this one). Anyways, I then added the following line to my boot.ini file:

C:\bootsect.lnx="Linux"

I restarted and nothing happened and I was booted right into Windows. Oh, and btw, I reset the menu timeout option from 30secs to none. Thus, in the boot.ini file I have "timeout=0". Anyone know how I can simply modify my boot.ini file or reinstall my MBR or whatever as long as I dont have to reinstall Windows or Linux, partition, or any of that crap. Thanks in advance.

No point in starting a new thread,
But, you should install lilo to the MBR, or make a floppy. A swap partition is something analogous to windows "virtual memory".
I dont think XP will easily boot linux.

Question Install LILO to MBR

Thanks a million for a solid reply. But now I need to know how to install LILO to my MBR as I am running XP without repartitioning/formatting/installing again. THANKS.

Ok, this is what I did following some other directions:

I made a file in XP in my C:\ called "bootsect.lnx" and added the following line:

dd if=/dev/hdx of=/bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1

And then I added the following line to my boot.ini file:

C:\bootsect.lnx="RedHat Linux 8.0"

Finally, I restarted my computer and the NTLDR loaded the menu with the two options of XP or RedHat. I chose RedHat and I got a failure message "disk error" <-- (not exactly how it appeared). Anyways, then, I don't know why I didn't do this before, but I popped in my RedHat8 startup diskette in my floppy drive and restarted. I got another failure message, this time "couldn't find kernel: image" or something like that; I had the "boot: " prompt in front of me then. But being the Linux Newbie I am, I don't know any of the commands. So, I need some help on fixing this problem; I got the menu, now I need it to actually boot. Any ideas. Thanks in advance.
