Dual Boot will not boot--and a configuration problem
 

My first problem:

I recently installed Linux (SuSE 9.1 Personal) on my HP zd8000 laptop to dual boot with Windows XP Home using Grub. The installation went flawless. The boot options worked great. I then found my SuSE 10.1 CD and did an upgrade install, which seemed to go well until I tried to reboot. When I turn on the power to the computer, it will POST, then nothing...all I get is a blinking underline curse at the top left of the screen. The only way I can get either Linux or Windows to boot is to have the SuSE 10.1 CD in the drive and to hit 'esc' before the computer POST and manually select boot from CD (it won't work if I configure the BIOS to automatically boot from CD). After I do that Grub loads and my boot options are as they should be. Windows was installed first (I have read that installing windows before any other OS is the easiest way to do it). My Linux partition is dev/hd3

What do I need to do to correct this problem?


My second problem:

This laptop has a 17" widescreen WXUGA+ or something like that 1680 x 1050 resolution. I'm using KDE and when I right click and select 'configure desktop' the only screen resolution available is 1024 x 768 (16 bit). When I go into YaST I can select the proper resolution, and it tells me it'll be fixed the next time it's loaded, but when I reboot, it's still at 1024 x 768.

Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Thanks for any help you can give. I feel really dumb, as I can answer just about any question concerning Windows. I just feel like it's time for me to start using Linux and become more knowledgeable and capable with Linux than I am with Windows.

1) Boot into Suse with your CD into the hard disk install.
2) open a command line and type su (this will prompt you for the root user password)
3) type grub-install /dev/hda (or sda if you have serial ATA hard drive)

I tried your suggestion, but it still doesn't work. I also tried the directions at http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/tip/18010.html

I'm at a loss...

I'll try to post the information listed in /mnt/boot/grub/menu.lst when I get a chance...no time now, gotta take my wife out for a late Valentine's Day dinner.

Tried that too, still doesn't work. I think I'm just going to wipe out the Linux partitions, reset the MBR and start over.
