Dual boot wih Win98 and suse
 

I have just got turned on to linux this fall in august and i know have suse 8.1 installed in my computer and i would like to dual boot windows 98 on it . and i need help

I have been sezrching the net but no help bu t i have notice a lot of down talk on suse so if you think there is a better distro let me know but keep in mind i only have 3 months xperienc with linux please help

Okay, I think you're saying that you have suse and windows installed successfully, and you want to install something so that your computer asks you to select which to boot into?

You can either install lilo or grub. I use lilo. Lilo is easier to configure than grub, but grub has many more features. First, make sure you have grub or lilo installers installed. Then, if you're using lilo, make a/etc/lilo.conf file. This is the main lilo config file. Then, run /sbin/lilo at a comand line to install lilo. For help to create the config file, see here:

I like suse and slack, so I say keep suse. If possible, I'd go for 9.1 though. 9.2 I'd hold off on since there is a little concern as to its stability and support for some hardware. I still have an 8.1 machine as my firewall though, the kernel has been upgraded to a fairly recent 2.4.x

I haven't worked with SUSE but its generally the same with most of the distro.

First create a primary partition for your win98, with enough unformatted free space for linux. and install win98 to the first partition.

If you already have installed Linux and don't want to disturb it. It may/mannot be possible.

Okay i dont have win98 installed yet all i have on my comp is suse 8.1. i want to put win 98 in it because It is smaller than XP i like
to download music with bit torrent and i cant seem to get i to work on Suse 8.1. I only have on Harddrive but i was
told i could put both on one. i just dont know how. I would also like to upgrade to suse 9.1 but i dont know how to
do it. please help thanx. AND THANX TO THE PEOPLE WHO ALREADY REPLIED TO HELP ME

Please post your partition table. And yes make sure you backup your critical files before attempting anything

Depending on your current partition it may or maynot be possible to install win98. As i said earlier if you have a free primary partition then you can very well install win98

If not then you have to repartition your entire drive.

It depends on the size of your hard drive. If you are looking at more than say 20-30 gigs. you need to create a dos partition ( I would create 3 ) for windows.

If you had a 40 g HDD, I would plit it 50/50 for win and suse. Make a 6g C drive, a 10 g D drive and 4 g E drive for win. C for win and programs, D for data and E for win cabs, driver backups etc etc. Then let suse partition the other 20 g. Thats what I do with win 98 SE and mandrake 10 on a 40 G HDD.

so as you see it will depend on the size of your drive. And dont listen to any down talk on suse, while I dont use it myself, I hear its a pretty good distro.

I am Sorry wha is a partition table?
My teacher installed this suse 8.1 he tried to do the dual boot with XP but Xp
would not load So i told him not ot worry bout it i was happy with linux but now i
have DSL and i cant download my comp is brandnew so i dont have ne thing
saved in to it (no important files)

Then you have to do some home-work before starting .You can google and find out more details.

I will tell the basic steps here.

-- This will remove all data from disk --

1. Boot from your Windows 98 install CD.
2. Follow the steps and create a partition for windows leave some space for installing linux.
3. Complete the Win 98 intallation.

4. Boot with your SUSE disk and create logical partitions for linux.
5. Install linux and install grub/lilo and configure them.

wha is a partition table? Super basic stuff.
 

When you buy a Western Digital or Matrox hard drive, you get a CD with which you can partition(make one drive look like C: D: E: instead of just C:) the drive( you need some partition program to leave some space out of the reach of windows). Remember to leave some space unpartitioned( to put your linux os in there). If you have a program like Partition Magic or other, better.
I loaded a Red Hat on the unpartitioned space with no problem( alongside Win 98). Haven't tried it with WinXP yet. I loaded Windows first, and then Linux. Then Linux setup helped me to get the Linux Loader on a Diskette. When I want to start Linux, I pop the disk in and start the computer; it asks me if i want to boot Win or Linux.( Sorry, this is my ultra basic, moronic if you will, way of using linux without knowing much about it)I do this stuff following directions while installing.

Here's my question:
Can I have Win 98, Xp and Red Hat on three partitions. I know I can, but will Lilo recognize 3 OS's?
