there are two things that let you select what os you want when you start up. In the mandrake install it defaults to lilo which is pretty nice looking or grub. Both those are free and easy to use. Make sure you add windows as an option when you install lilo/grub. Mandrake has probably the easiest install around. Put the cd in, boot from it, and right there is a graphical installer. As for programs you can select which to install and which to not. Also mandrake has a very easy to resize partitions, run defrag in windows first and see how much room it takes up and give windows room so you don't make the partition to small. Mandrake should work to resize ntfs windows xp partitions but I'm not sure so you might want to wait and see what some others have to say.

Both lilo and grub are bootloaders. I use lilo, aka Linux Loader, with the exact same OS's you do (WinXP Pro and the Mandrake 9.1 distro) and it works great. Like darin2003 said, you can configure lilo during the Mandrake install and specify it to include Windows in your boot menu. After that, your ready to boot to either one everytime your computer starts up.
