dual boot LInux and Linux

After using windows for over 20 years, I decided to switch to Linux...fed up with virus, crashes, restarting etc.
Just installed Artistx (based on Ubuntu) and it works perfect. Now I am trying to add an other distro (maybe PClos or Fusion...) to my external USB HD. After starting liveCD and installing and restarting my PC, nothing is bootable... "file does not exist". Maybe this is not difficlt to solve, but as a newbe I have no idea what to do. Windows 7 on first HD and other distros on the external drive works ok so I think Linux distros on separate drives could be working too.
Any suggestions welcome.
Thanks in advance!

If it runs off of usb, make sure that it is in the "boot list" in your system Bios. It is possible that IDE/RAID/whatever else you have, maybe even a different usb port, are set on the list, and this one is not.

Yes, drive is in my Bos boot list and as I said before I did use Win 7 and Linux before, on these 2 drives, It seems that Grub is "confused" when trying to figure out what to load and tells it can find either drive or dists.

Do you think it is important which drive to install first...should I install the external drive first without bootloader and let grub find that when installing the first drive...just a thought...still too novice with linux...

If the last distribution installed was on the USB disk, it'll have to be plugged in to boot, as that's where Grub lives. The "main" disk's MBR contains a pointer to Grub so if the disk isn't plugged in, it won't boot. If you've a second USB disk plugged in you'll have to ensure the USB disks are plugged in in the same order or they could be assigned different IDs, which again, will cause a boot failure.

Play Bonny!
