Dual boot Chromebook via Crouton

Hi everyone. Having used windows for years and got more and more frustrated with it I decided I would follow some guides about turning my Chromebook into a linux dual boot computer. I have Ubuntu 16.04 on my Asus chromebook but I have the following problems:
1) When I try to download a programm from the software center I get an Authentication error - and a message not allowed to perform this.
2) I can not get a USB drive mounted. When I insert drive I get a message Unable to mount drive and then not authorised to perform operation.

I have overcome point 1 by running Sudo software-center but I can't seem to use a USB drive.

I would be really grateful if anyone could help with this - with the limited storage space on a Chromebook the use of a USB drive is essential to me.

Thank you.

Meh... I don't "dual boot" anything anymore. Just use virtual machines and, if need be, externally-attached disk drives. VirtualBox is absolutely free, runs on every host, and is backed by one of the largest software companies in the world. IMHO, there's simply no reason to fool with dual booting.

are you saying these are two separate messages?

i can only venture a guess - something went wrong with the crouton setup.
iirc it's not exactly a one click installation?
maybe you should retrace your steps.

or provide more detailed information.

both errors are - duh - permissions related. could point to policykit problems, but why wouldn't they work ootb on ubuntu...

edit:
you might want to investigate if crouton is the only way to get a real gnu/linux onto this machine.

Thank you for your reply. Yes they were 2 seperate messages. I will probably have to clear my chromebook and try again lke you suggest. There are other ways of getting Linux on my Chromebook but when reading up about them they didn't sound so good. I was just hoping someone had come across my problem and had an easy answer.
