DSL wifi problem

I have a toshiba satellite 4000cdt laptop running dsl 4.4.10, and recently I bought a netgear wg511t pcmcia wireless card to be able to utilize it as on the go, but I have a problem. While the card should be working out of the box, when it finds an open network and connects, I have no internet. I tried posting at the dsl forums,as well as googled, but I found no answers and wasn't allowed creating a new thread in the DSL forums... Can anyone help me with this? I can't see what is going wrong here...

sence there is about 300 hundred linux distros out the a good start would be to say. Distro.
any way configure for dhcp if you want to connect to an open internet. then run dhcpcd. But this will not make since to you because you need to learn this stuff or tell us the distro. http://www.linuxquestions.org/linux/answers/Networking.
you need to set up the router wan to automatic IP and dns. unless you have a static connection. hang in there.

Thanks for the quick reply.
I already told you the distro I'm using, it is (damn small linux) DSL 4.4.10 based on knoppix and it uses a 2.4 kernel.
Already tried the dhcp trick, no effect, confirmed that the router in the specific hotspot does automatically set the ip and dns, but the laptop aparrently has a problem resolving dns hostnames and connecting to ips...

Also, I don't know if this makes any difference the pcmcia card that I'm using has an atheros chipset.

ok DSL can be a lot of things when talking about internet. who told you that your pcmcia card would work out of the box with a 2.4 kernel. mwith out building thr prism driver or patch or use mad wifi. Not say DSL dose not support it I am not using it. but the 2.4.39 I used last i had to build the driver. not sure .if so please read the link I sent you. think of it this way half of the card is run by linux module the other half is an open sorce firmware. if you do not have both the card is pretty much stand still. I looked around and will keep looking for you on info.

DSL has madwifi support. Tried both prism and and ndiswrapper installs, but no luck either.

my old old toshiba I had to go into bios and set it to something/16bit then it became fully activated. that is a statillite 2105cds any way I went to and put puppy 4.12 on it and it found the pcmcia card it was the new realteck card but puppy uses the 2.6.25 krnel i believe.
and has all the support as DSL. it is 96 mb. eveyone uses it passes it around at church.

Yeah, I know... I would be using that myself, but the laptop does not react too well on ram usage (ancient laptop and very low ram).
I did the cardbus/16-bit setting in the bios and that's how the card was recognised by the system.
