Anyone know how to set up sbc dsl with 2wire ports on suse personal 9.1? This is the only thing holding me back from using Linux. I called sbc’s tech support and they wouldn’t help because it wasn’t windows. I have fond things on how to set up sbc dsl with Ethernet but because of the 2wire I cant find anything that has been able to help me. Im brand spanking new to Linux so I have no clue what im doing I got through installation and hit a wall

Had a look at their help page but there are many different modem/routers so could you tell which one you are using.
In general terms at the splitter you have a telephone jack (RJ11?) and modem jack (RJ45) which are usually clearly marked. Take the lead for the modem and plug it into the modem.
You obviously need a ethernet card. Check the documentation that came with the modem/router because most of them have a setup page configured for a browser. You need to configure the network card. You need to tell us if your distro has dhcp working and if it can configure networking itself. If not then we can talk you through the setup. If it has then it should be able to start talking to the router immediately. If that is the case then the manual will give an IP address to use eg 10.0.0.12. Bring up a browser and in the address bar type in http://10.0.0.12/ and you should get a screen that requests a password for admin and they give a password. Then use the detail given by the ISP about your login detail. If it all goes like this then you need to change the admin password to your own immediately.

The problem is I have this 2port modem that doesn’t use a router. The modem is hooked up to the phone jack and them with Ethernet to the main computer all the other computers in the house have an adapter that plugs into a usb port then into a phone jack. It eliminates the need for a router. For widows all I had to do was plug in the usb and install some software and it was all done. I cant run the software in Suse and all the help I can find deals with Ethernet.

Lets not worry about other computers and usb. Please confirm that the modem you have has an ethernet port and give us the type it is.

I know this is going to sound lame but how do I find what kind of Ethernet it is out? The closest thing I can find to this in the setup manual is Enternet 300. I don’t know if they are calling it that for some ungodly reason or if its just not listed. Sorry im brand new to having to figure anything out for myself

To just to try and clarify this. The modem will have a name on it please could you tell us what the name is. This will allow us to get some technical info on it via the net. On the back of the modem i am assuming there is a point to plug the cable from the phone into and another for an ethernet cable and another for usb??? In order to use ethernet you have to have an ethernet card in the machine. Please could you also tell us which Linux distro you are using and the version.

flux did state he(she) was using a 2wire modem. Do you have one of these units.

According to what minimal documentation is on their website it is a modem and a router. Depending on the model it can have 1-4 ethernet ports, wifi and HPNA. The other computers that flux was talking about connect to the router via HPNA (Home Phone network adapter) .

So from the previous post the DSL modem/router has one ethernet port. The install guide again does not provide any real information and everything is setup using the install CD.

Do you have your network adaptor working? So we are going to have to work from scratch. In starting off I would look at the network configuration on the windows PCs. Write down the gateway address and DNS information. You might want to look at the routers configuration pages. After looking at the support web pages I found the routers IP address is: 172.16.0.1 or http://home as its hostname.

You should be able to configure the SuSE's network adpater for DHCP and assign the gateway for the address above. I'm not real familer with SuSE and so I can't tell you exactly how to configure the network adapter if yast can not do it.

Check the /etc/resolv.conf file for DNS information. If you do not see any IP address then you can manually add them using the information collected from the windows boxes. Should be:

nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

Add an entry for each DNS IP address that you copied from the windows boxes.
