DSL Internet Connection for Mandriva Linux

I am new to Linux and do not know, practically anything about it. Last night I installed Mandriva Fre-2008 i586 Linux and tried to configure a DSL internet connection. While the network card says that I am connected, I am not getting any websites. I have given the correct DNS and IP Nos which I used with the same connection in Win XP. Can anyone help with this? Thanks - mkaithalayil

Configure the ethernet card as automatic Ip (DHCP)

Do you connect directly to your DSL modem or through a router? If a direct connection to the router and your ISP uses PPPoE, you will need to set up a PPP client with your DSL user name and password. I usually suggest tp-pppoe as it's easy to configure and you should be able to find a Mandriva package for it. This assumes you connect via Ethernet to your modem ... USB modems can be trickier.

If you have a home router that runs DHCP, just follow ronlau9's advice. You can get a cheap home DSL router for US$40 or so and are usually nice to have.

DSL Internet Connection

To ronalu's response, my response is as follows:

Control Center > Network and Internet > Setup New Network > Choose Connection > DSL > Select Network Interface > Realtek Semiconductor Co. Ltd. TRL-8139C/8139C+ > Select Provider > India > Any > Please select Connection Protocol > tried DHCP, tried Manual TCP/IP and tried PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE) > Access Settings > Account Login (user name) ……. Account Password ……. > Connection Control > selected (Allow users to Manage the Connection) > Do you want to connect to the Network > (Yes) >
Congratulations, the Network and Internet configuration is finished > After this you restart your computer to avoid any host name related problems.

The above is the step by step actions that I had taken to get connected to the Internet. I tried DHCP, Manual TCP/IP and PPPoE. I am told by the Internet Provider that the connection type is PPPoE. Does this make any sense? Your help much appreciated

Thanks - mkaithalayil

You,re provider should know what type of connection he provide you with.
In the past when I use PPPoE my settings off the ethernet card was indeed PPPoE and IP dynamic , but at that time I only use Suse and that was all what suse need to know to make connection

Hopes will help you

Hi,

Setting up PPPoE on Fedora is quite simple. Here is a straightforward software which can do it for you, having a GUI. Get the RP-PPPoE rpm from here and install it. http://www.roaringpenguin.com/products/pppoe. After you install it, run "tkpppoe" from the console. Rest of the settings are as simple as they are in windows.

Hope it helps...
