DSL Connectivity Issue in Mint 17.2 64 bit

I am new to Linux. My first experiment in working with a Live Disk of Mint 17.2 Cinnamon 64bit on a USB stick in a laptop worked well with wireless connectivity established easily. But Mint on either USB or DVD does not connect to the internet via a wired connection on my desktop. The OS will boot up, but the networking applet sticks in a loop of trying to connect, failing, disconnecting, and retrying. I've tried adjusting network settings in Mint, but I'm not having success. Also, Linux isn't interfacing with my desktop's USB mouse and keyboard immediately after booting up. I have to unplug these USB devices and reconnect them in order to interface with Linux.

My experiences are much like the OP in this thread http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopi...ct+to+internet. Some of the results he gets are identical to mine when I run the same commands, i.e.: "Network card: Realtek RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller driver: r8169."

Thank you for ideas. I have hit a wall.

My ISP is Frontier, and the router is a Westell Model 7500. Do I need to update a network card driver with Mint OS booted up? I'm not sure how I would do that. I do know that Realtek has Linux driver downloads available for this card. I'm not sure where the problem(s) lay.

Thank you again for any help or suggestions -- even if just to help point me in the right direction.

Before we get too far. How have you decided it doesn't work wired? What tests have you used?

Did you try ifconfig to start?

Now to get to modem. If you are saying that wifi will work easily then we'd have to assume that the connection point for your isp should be in the modem and that it should be nat to lan using dhcp.

Sounds like the Network Manager for Wired might be buggy. <OR>
The configuration file (/etc/network/interfaces) for wired may need adjusting-

https://wiki.debian.org/NetworkConfiguration

I have the same chipset that you do and the r8169 driver is being used by the kernel.
My wifi is working great but when it wasn't working I found out that wifi was comment out in the /etc/network/interfaces file.
As soon as I edited that file and removed the pound sign from in front of the word wifi and rebooted all worked well.

I spent the evening learning about the ifconfig command. Thank you for introducing me to it, jefro! I'm not having any success with any adjustments I make. Booting and rebooting Mint to get IP to reset doesn't matter. Addressing doesn't work, I guess. I can't even access my router's address from the address bar in Firefox.

I will get back to this tonight. I'm looking forward to understanding your points Ztcoracat. Thank you both for the ideas.

1. Dedicated DSL line from property service to computer room
A. Line in → DSL/Phone filter
a. DSL line to DSL connection port on Westell 7500 (Model A90-750044-07) ADSL2+ Modem Router
WEP and MAC supplied on manufacturer's sticker (without dashes or semicolons)
b. Ethernet cable from modem E1 Uplink port to back of CybertronPC Assassin GM2242A Desktop
2. Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller
A. Driver Version 9.1.401.2015
3. Frontier DSL service is both PPPoE and DHCP
A. No support from Frontier (Windows-only support)
Code:

“You should use Windows.  It will connect automatically; then, you won't have these problems!  We don't support Linux.”
B. Extra subscription charge for static address
4. Currently have Windows 10 installed
5. Tried “Linux Mint 17.2 64bit” and “Ubuntu 15.04 Desktop amd64.iso”
6. Have yet to successfully access router address
7. Receiving messages (Ubuntu) such as:
Code:

Connection activation failed. (1) Creating object for path '/org/freedesktop/NetworkManager/ActiveConnection/245' failed in libnm-glib.
Ubuntu pppd[3398]:  Timeout waiting for PADO packets
Ubuntu pppd[3398]:  Unable to complete PPPoE Discovery
Ubuntu pppd[3411]:  Timeout waiting for PADO packets
Ubuntu pppd[3411]:  Unable to complete PPPoE Discovery

8. ifconfig (Mint) yields something akin to:
Code:

eth0          Link encap:Ethernet Hwaddr xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
          inet6 addr:xxxx::xxxx:xxxx:xxxx:xxxx/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:1749 errors:0 dropped:2 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:5 errors:0 dropped:282 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueulen:1000
          RX bytes:113861 (113.8 KB) TX bytes:736 (736.0B)

  lo          Link encap:Local Loopback
          inet addr:xxx.x.x.x Mask:xxx.x.x.x
          inet6 addr:  ::1/128 Scope:Host
          UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:65536 Metric:1
          RX packets:41 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:41 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueulen:0
          RX bytes:4209 (4.2 KB) TX bytes:4209 (4.2 KB)

9. I've tried multiple variations of settings so some of this changes depending. However, no combination of settings changes has yielded positive results.
10. I'm stuck in this Windows box and can't get out!

Https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ADSLPPPoE suggests running
Code:

dpkg -s pppoeconf
. I then verified
Code:

Package:pppoeconf and Status: install ok installed
Running
Code:

sudopppoeconf
yields two scans, one for PPPoE Access Concentrator on eth0 which times out, then one in multi-modem mode. Failing, I get a windowed message saying,
Code:

NOT CONNECTED.  Sorry, I scanned 1 interface,  but the Access Concentrator of your provider did not respond.  Please check your network and modem cables.  Another reason for the scan failure may also be another running pppoe process which controls the modem. <ok>
I created a DSL connection and deleted the initial ether net connection. This achieves
Code:

Connection failure.  Connection activation failed.  (1) Creating object path'/org/freedesktop/NetworkManager/ActiveConnection/10' failed in libnm-glib.

Linux (Ubuntu) Realtek Card Networking Driver Resolution

It's taken some time, but I've finally gotten my issue resolved. After narrowing problems down to simply running:
Code:

sudo ifconfig eth0 "device IP address" netmask "IP address"
and
Code:

sudo route add default gw "IP adress"
my friend and I discovered that we could ping the local device, but still not the router or beyond. We used Windows to access the Realtek website (http://www.realtek.com/downloads/dow...etDown=false#2) to download the latest Linux driver. Making note of the file name and location in Windows, we were able to access the file in Windows from inside Linux and to unpack the tar ball. After updating the Realtek RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet card driver, networking began to work immediately.

Thank you to everyone for assistance. I'm happy to have found the answer to my problem; to begin experiencing Linux!
