Could be a couple things:
-is your modem supported?
-Is the driver loaded?
-are your ppp settings ok?

DOLLAR22 04-07-2003 09:13 AM

yes modem is supported
driver is loaded
ppp - questionable

installed Lindows on Windows XP machine and connection worked
fine! nosw running Knoppix CD on same machine and no connection, also sound card recognized by Knoppix but no sound

iceman47 04-07-2003 09:23 AM

ppp settings are in /etc/ppp :)
have a look at the files, you will be able to write username & passwdord in one of them.

Can you ping an IP for an outside site? It may be that your DNS server is not dynamically assigned by your ISP, in which case you would need to find out the DNS address used by your ISP and tell Linux what it is. I'm not sure of the best way to do that with Knoppix, but if it has any kind of a net configuration app, it should ask you for the DNS address (or "nameserver address") at some point.

well i would if i knew hom!

Dave Skywatcher 04-08-2003 03:46 PM

Right, sorry about that. :) In console or a terminal window, type:

ping 216.239.33.100 (This is an IP for Google, which I provided in case you don't have another one to try)

If it can get through, it will tell you round-trip times. This would almost certainly mean a DNS issue (the OS doesn't know what nameserver to use). If you're not sure what it's telling you, post the results here.
