Drivers for Linux

I recall RH going crazy when I tried to change the resolution. It would crash at the login screen, I'm wondering if this could be fixed with a driver. Could I just go to ATI's site or do I have to get a specific driver made just for Linux? I'm downloading Fedora and I don't want the same problems again. Kind of confused here with drivers here. Furthermore - would a driver even fix this problem? Thanks.

I am slowly losing my mind with this 800X600 garbage, yet I can't change the res. because I'm sure it'll boot into a black screen. I'm starting to go insane - please help. Will a driver fix my problem so I can change the res?

You shouldn't have a problem changing the res... Fedora is a lot newer than Redhat so give it a go, if it screws up you won't get a black screen you'll get an X.org error whcih is super easy to fix after you tell us what the error is.

It might be a good idea to tell us what make/type of monitor your using. Did you modify the X configuration file to reflect the correct settings for your monitor?
When the black screen occurs, can you still use <ctrl><alt><fx> (where x is 1 .. 6) to go to a console and login.
If so, are there any errors in the X11 logfiles in /var/log that might point to the problem?

I have a Cybervision C70, and I always set everything to 1024X768 and everything's OK. I once tried to get into the console and I even logged in but then I got a message saying I had new mail and it wanted me to type some other stuff on I didn't know. So I got mad and did a reinstall. I don't want the same thing to happen with Fedora. I'll just expiriment with an ATI driver - I think it will help possibly.

Just in case, the spec for your monitor.
Quote:

Input Signal
Video Signal : Analog
H Frequency : 30-70 Khz
V Frequency : 50-90 Hz
Sync Signal : Separate
The values for H Frequency and V Frequency should be in your X configuration (HorizSync and VertRefresh respectively).
