Now, if this is just a general question about Linux drivers, the answer to that would be that most of them are already included in the kernel and that there are just a few special cases where a company has decided to keep the source code proprietary or the license incompatible necessitating a few extra steps to get whatever device(s) working.

Most drivers are compiled into the linux kernel by your distro. They normally try to make their distros compatible with almost any pc. How ever if your kernel has drivers but are compiled into or as a module then you may have to recompile a fresh kernel. This takes a better understanding on how to do this. Some drivers for video cards you can get from your hardware provider. These driver normally install as modules so you don't have to rebuild the kernel.
